Public bug reported: I'm using Compiz. When I start an application maximized, close it, and reopen it, it starts maximized as normal, but the window looks like its borders are not touching the sides and bottom of the screen. Basically, there is a small space that the window does not appear to cover. However, the underlying window placement appears to be correct, as appears wjen I hover the top right corner of my application. The X button lights up as usual. (I'm using Clearlook with buttons at right.) Apparently, this is just a display problem. I tried unsetting my Compiz gconf keys, which reset my carefully tweaked configuration, but it was no use. When I move the window, the problem disappears.
