I have the same problem too. This used to work fine. I changed the way I
was working so I don't know when it started to happened (I begun leaving
my external HDs on and mounted until shutdown).

This is the first time Lucid is having stability problems. Now, my
system ALWAYS freeze if I click on the "safely remove" option, and it
happens on both of my external HD (both NTFS).

IMPORTANT: I'm able to unmount the drives on the terminal using 'sudo
umount ...', but again the graphical option from the desktop: absolutely
and irremediable kill my PC. Only a hard reset (power button hold for +4
secs) can bring the system up again.

Details on the HD (both 1Tb NTFS drives):

    Bus 002 Device 004: ID 059b:0370 Iomega Corp.
    Bus 001 Device 005: ID 1058:1100 Western Digital Technologies, Inc.

Details of my system:

    $ lsb_release -a

    No LSB modules are available.
    Distributor ID:     Ubuntu
    Description:        Ubuntu 10.04.3 LTS

    $ uname -a
