I don't have the usb drive with me anymore but as far as i remember it tried to access the first folder, within a first folder (and so on) until it hit an archive file, trying to access something from it. Something like this /folder1/folder2/.../archive.tar/file.x. I'll try to get the usb back, hopefully with the same files, and report the results.

I use a external usb hard drive (200GB HD) and I have no problems. In my HD other then 80% of space is busy, but Ubuntu works both as Live and as Install tool.
