Exactly same problem, same HW (AMD64, Phenom CPU, Radeon HD*). sudo apt-get install gnome-shell
seemed to resolve this bug, but only was the tip of the iceberg of getting back to normal ubuntu life. People likely will be directed/googled here, I just want to show what did not bring things back to normal desktop life. Each time follwed by a reboot: - replace lightdm with gdm - reinstall fglrx See http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1805081&page=4 - reinstall openbox - cp /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/gdm.session ~/.xinitrc A bit more background story: 1) Before upgrade, I had openbox as my default screen manager. 2) After upgrade, I was greeted with lightdm (selected at upgrade). 3) After selecting openbox at lightdm (or actually whatever), I logged into something black with a X mouse cursor. No menu etc. As the original description: was a themeless error msg stating no Gnome. 4) I went to tty1 and killed X. 5) sudo apt-get remove lighdm 6) sudo apt-get --reinstall install gdm 7) startx in tty does do anything 8) Found http://askubuntu.com/questions/41809/how-to-start-x-from-command-line figured that ~/.xinitrc was missing. 9) cp /usr/share/gnome-session/sessions/gdm.session ~/.xinitrc 10) sudo reboot now 11) boot continues in ansi term style until "Battery check.." and then you are asked for username and pw to log into that tty. No gdm etc. 12) Logged in 13) startx and gdm is visible 14) Select "Ubuntu" this time and end up something unity'ish. Notably the graphics driver has serious problems, as everything is ill painter with black squares. 15) sudo apt-get --reinstall fglrx 16) sudo service gdm start Brings me to gdm on tty7. 17) Loggin into "Gnome" now triggers some 30+ "error report" dialogs for crashed processes. Many of themare metacity, gnome-volume-manger, gnome-settings-daemon etc. I select report and restart the proc. My suspects: 1) Radeon Driver is somehow ill. 2) Unity/Gnome shell rely on some packages which were not present in my 11.04 environment (I deinstalled Unity because of headache there already). Currently still no usefull desktop. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/811355 Title: Oneiric won't start x on boot up To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-server/+bug/811355/+subscriptions -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
