** Description changed:

  Hi,
on a fresh install (via breezy dvd and apt-get dist-upgrade) on a G4 ibook,
the default sound volume settings are a bit amiss.

The built-in speakers are set to very quiet (eg startup chime,
rhythmbox), but headphones are ok when plugged in. The default audio
recorder records nothing, neither does ekiga in sound test mode.

Pressing the louder keys does make it louder - but only for half a
second, after that it remains as quiet as before; the setting is on
  maximum then.

- If I double-click on the sound icon, un-hide and maximise all switches,
- I can get the built-in loudspeakers to get loud, and setting input
- source to microphone (instead of line) does play back what the mic
- records. However, there still is no way to make ekiga/ gnome-sound-
- recorder actually record anything.

  Please:
  * make the micro work,
  * set the internal loudspeakers reasonably loud
  * fix this suddely-loud-for-an instant behavoir of the volume buttons (f4,
f5, f6)

Probably all this is rather easy to solve with some time at hand. My
point is the system should be in an optimal state after install, not
forcing you to mess with every imaginable aspect of it.

  Thank you!
