Just a quick update: After the most recent stable kernel update, I was forced to rebuild compat wireless and found that it was flaky, once again (version of Aug 01st, 2011). Installing Linux 3.0 as per https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/MainlineBuilds things are funcitoning again. Note that if you use fglrx, version 11.7 has support for that kernel, so no hassle.
