I have the same problem on my HP and this is someway related to the
module lis3lv02d, which controls the internal accelerometer inside the
computer. The module provides a joystick interface (/dev/input/jsX) to
the accelerometer which is activated when you open a game with joystick
support, once the module enters in action the volume control gets
totally crazy (continuous random up and down). The volume stops to do
that when you close the game/software.

I don't know why the volume gets out of control, just suspect that is
something related to volume-slider and multimedia keys from keyboards
Including the mute button and the wireless button), that seems to be
interacting with lis3lv02d.

These seems to happen with almost every HP notebook model from recent
years.
