I found this bug report via Google and can report similar issues on
powerpc64 lucid. I have attached my log file from /var/cache/modass.

As above, I ran the commands:

sudo module-assistant prepare openafs-modules
sudo module-assistant auto-build openafs-modules

And received an error.

Of course, I ran these commands after seeing:
  aklog: unable to obtain tokens for cell athena.mit.edu (status: 11862788).

and:

$ sudo /etc/init.d/openafs-client restart
Stopping AFS services:.
Starting AFS services:
AFS module /lib/modules/2.6.32-21-powerpc64-smp/fs/openafs.o does not exist.
Not starting AFS.  Please consider building kernel modules using
instructions in /usr/share/doc/openafs-client/README.modules
