Same problem here. This is a 64-bit system that has been dist-upgraded
from natty.

Tried removing, purging, and reinstalling debsums - didn't help.
Tried sudo debsums_init - didn't help.

Another workaround:

sudo mv /usr/bin/debsums /usr/bin/debsumsNOT

This will allow the upgrades to go through, without removing the
package.
