Just for the info, a solution (though not very standard) has been found
for this issue in the Ubuntu Forums:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=11138693

To summarize, the issue was being caused by the inexistant folder
/usr/lib/perl/5.10.1/asm. So we copied over that folder from a clean
installation to the system with the problem, and that did the trick.

There's also an attached file in that post if you don't have access to a
clean installation.
