I got the same problem on a pentium 4 ht, everything works perfectly on a fresh install, if I install the nvidia-glx driver the system on shutdown closes all services perfectly and hangs on 'system will now halt'. This occurs with all kernels available, at the moment is the 2.6.15-26-386 and I also tryed with the acpi=force. I had the same problem with breezy so is a long time that it is preventing people from using games or the pc at all.
