Just replaced /etc/samba/smb.conf with /etc/samba/smb.conf.ucf-dist
This brings back the second instance in the workgroup and still has the same
error when I try to log in.

Nautilus!
I just un-shared the shares in Nautilus. The shares disappeared. Ubuntu can
still log in. However, Windows still sees two copies and can't log in. Same
error
