Vast improvements have be done on the CUPS Raster output device of Ghostscript 9.04 which comes with Ubuntu Oneiric, especially handling PDF files with transparency, memory management, speed, color reproduction. Therefore I recommend you to boot a live CD of Ubuntu Oneiric, update this system to the current state, set up a queue for your printer and try to print. Does it work then?
In general, to know more about your problem, especially to see whether Oneiric really fixes it, and also to see whether we can issue an SRU (Stable Release Update, fix on an already released Ubuntu version) we need all information to reproduce your problem.
