The precise error is: dpkg: unrecoverable fatal error, aborting: files list file for package 'checkbox' is missing final newline Can you attach the file /var/lib/dpkg/info/checkbox.list to see exactly what got written down? In theory, dpkg only writes valid .list files and usually this error is the result of some sort of file system corruption. What filesystem are you using for /var? Are you using an SSD disk? Your log is interesting because the error clearly appears after an upgrade of checkbox 0.8.6 to 0.9.1. That said one month elapsed between the upgrade and the first time we see the failure.
