The only possible (but extremely unlikely) thing I can think of is nvidia-glx screwing with the kernel and breaking this process but that'd be random. Otherwise I suppose it's possible eds is doing something involving the WM that it thinks is cheap because it's cheap with metacity but lots of work with compiz.
