For me it is a bit different, but I suspect it is the same bug: 1. Already in Natty (maybe earlier, but I cannot remember for sure), the bookmarks menu was messed up. Sometimes it showed icons, sometimes it did not.
2. I'm not sure, but IIRC In Natty that was with the desktop menu, and the menu of a nautilus window may have behaved differently. In earlier Ubuntu releases it may have happened also in the menu that belonged to a nautilus window. 3. Also in Natty, when icons were invisible, the first entry (Downloads) often was indented compared to the other entries, as if there was space for an invisible icon. Though the other entries were not indented even if they showed no icons. I cannot remember if this was different for desktop or window. 4. After upgrading to Oneiric, the icons were initially not there in the desktop menu, when I noticed. And the indent was gone. So I thought the bug was fixed by removing the icons for good. I don't remember the situation in the window menu 5. However today, suddenly Downloads showed an icon again in the desktop menu. 6. I looked for this bug, made screenshot, etc. and while I was doing this suddenly the Downloads icon was gone again, though there was no indent either. 7. I checked the window menu, and it shows all icons Attached screenshots: "Bookmarks - desktop - one icon" is the first screenshot I made for this report. "Bookmarks - desktop - no icons" is how it suddenly appeared after making the earlier screenshot.
