Thanks for your insight Chris, very useful! Sorry I misunderstood your surname with middle names. That highlights the fact that in in general we have a number of people with double surnames (like Rhys Jones, Kamstrup Erlandsen, García Rodríguez) depending on language and culture.
Shortname is an interesting proposition. Sounds simpler than a complex truncation algorithm that still might mess up peoples names (not good). That way people also have control over the presentation.
