Thanks to Sérgio for his comments. Your were correct in assuming insufficient space on the master drive. I was able to resolve this problem by using the advanced partitioning option during the install. I put the boot folder "/boot" on a partition of the master disk and the root folder "/" on a partition of the slave disk. After that the install ran without any more problems and get the appropriate menu to select between windows or ubuntu at boot time.
