One way to check it would be 1) Install latest known working distro (10.10) 2) Ensure it's working 3) Upgrade alsa driver through https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/InstallingLinuxAlsaDriverModules 4) Reboot If HDMI stops working now, the problem is on the audio driver side and an AlsaInfo from before and after to compare would be interesting.
