I think I have the same problem with oneiric. Except when this happens to me it brings down my computer and I have to reboot (see bug #843265).
If you run anki from the terminal, do you see this message? QWidget::setMinimumSize: (MainWindow/AnkiQt) The largest allowed size is (16777215,16777215) For me anki works fine under metacity but not unity or gnome-shell.
