It sounds like you have discovered a serious upgrade bug. Nevertheless your problem is not related to this bug. Please file a new bug report about this. Some related questions: 1. Were you running a closed-source nvidia or ati driver in your previous configuration? 2. If you were running closed source drivers, where from? From the repository or from the ati/nvidia website? 3. Did you manually tweak your xorg.conf? 4. Does the feisty live cd boot normally when you try it? PS 1. I'm not an ubuntu developer, I just triage some bugs here and there. But I have a strong feeling, from reading the forum-post you linked to, that this is happening: - the dist-update switched you back to opensource drivers - the dist-update did not update your xorg.conf because it was manually altered. Although I do wonder why ati users (i'm assuming your an ati user) are using anything but the opensource ati drivers: they are more stable and it supports beryl and compiz) On a related note: the automatic x-sever not working so fall back to vesa driver was planned for Feisty, but delayed. Perhaps it will make it in Gutsy Gibbon. Also, users can use the safe-boot feature on the boot menu. (I think) PS 2. I'm not really sure running closed-source drivers was previously supported. It required tweaking xorg.conf by hand, which means a 'novice' user wouldn't have this problem. In Feisty, you can enable restricted drivers graphically. PS 3. A majority of the users actually keep their /home directory on a separate partition and reinstall a new version instead of updating. Perhaps this explains why updates are often problematic: there is much less testing by the community, since they prefer fresh installs. -- [feisty] x server wont start after upgrade https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/88340 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is the bug contact for Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
