I'm saying that it has not been fixed in some time, and probably won't
be for some time. I would like to see it fixed. But (1) the "right" fix
is a significant amount of work, and (2), the Debian coreutils
maintainers, IIRC, do not wish to implement the "quick" fix (using GNU
install-info). As I said, there may be valid reasons for not wanting to
do so, if there are interaction problems between GNU's and dpkg's.

Just because Debian doesn't want to, doesn't mean Ubuntu can't. It may
be worth maintaining a separate patch until the problem is resolved:
again, if there aren't interaction issues.

I plan on pitching in my help to address this, when I have the time to
dedicate to it. I would also like to start a discussion on the
development mailing list, but before I do so, I will have to do some
more research to refresh my understanding as to why fixing dpkg's
install-info (or migrating everything to GNU's), is non-trivial.
