I have discovered that this symptom only occurs when I have disabled compositing in Metacity using gconftool --set --type bool /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager false I have to do this in order to avoid the terminal window overlay bug #788607 Whether this bug should be marked invalid therefore depends on whether Unity-2d should be able to function correctly with compositing disabled. I leave that decision for someone who knows the answer to that question.
