Hi Brian, It could be that it was a drive problem. At the time I was using ubuntu on a live usb stick. Those problems have disappeared when switching to Ubuntu via the Wubi installer. I'm now happily running Ubuntu 11.04 alongside windows and all those issues are gone. In fact, Wubi is the best way to try out Ubuntu, not the live usb stick, for me.
