Either something I did or a ubuntu update has made Banshee work again. After my last reboot, Banshee was able to start again. In between Update Manager updated some things, including a new kernel version 3.0.0-11-generic. Or, it might have been a delayed effect of changing the qt4 theme or removing Banshee configuration files which I'd also done (neither had an immediate effect as I tested each by running Banshee). .
