My /etc/pango is the same only a sym link pangox.aliases I had a break with my install and I followed Michael Vogt's $ sudo dpkg --configure -a $ sudo apt-get install -f $ sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
That fixed a problem that I had with the fonts on the desktop only showing a box and no chars, must be a good thing to remember after a upgrade that goes bad.
