Thanks all for your help to improve Ubuntu by reporting this bug. I have
updated a merge proposal with a fix, that I think will take care of this
encoding issue.

A build with the fix is available at
https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/misc, and it would be great if
you could install it and confirm that it actually fixes the bug.
