Interesting - I was getting this bug using GDM > Unity (3d) - it was shortly followed by a Metacity crash report (Bug #797078 ?) which seemed odd - should metacity be running in 3d? Deleting .config seems to have cured it but could just be a coincidence as I have done a batch of updates since...
