Mathieu, I was in the default Gnome session (Unity). However, I had removed various 'indicator' type packages from the system while I was trying to figure out why I had two battery icons displayed. Maybe I've removed something I shouldn't have! Can you give me an authoritative list of what packages are needed for the the icon to display?
