I think I've just found a temporary workaround for myself: if I log into Unity 
2D then run:
compiz --replace
...followed by (in a separate tab):
unity --replace
...then I get Unity 3D back...somewhat. I'm still stuck with 2D's launcher, but 
at least I can get Expo, Grid, the new Alt+Tab, the Dash, etc., back.
