Before doing the apport-collect provided above I repeated the original
experiments and verified that the reported behaviour is still found, and
indeed it is, even after update of Lucid and kernels. Present versions:

Ubuntu Lucid 10.04.3 
Kernel 2.6.38-11
Kernel 2.6.32-34

Sticks simply cannot be used with Kernel *.38 (stalls, connection
losses, slow even under best circumstances), while with kernel *.32  the
sticks can be used at nominal WLAN-G speeds (not WLAN N), but both
sticks performing sub-par, slower than the internal WLAN-G adapter.
