This problem appears to be the root cause of my laptop's failure to
hibernate on lid close.  The settings appear right, and I can see that
/etc/acpi/lid.sh is getting run.  Adding debug echos to that script
shows that /proc/acpi/button/lid/LID/state always gives "state:
open".

As with Christian's case, I can successfully hibernate from menus, etc.
- just not from lid close.  This worked fine on Dapper for me, so seems
to be some type of regression.
