I think I have a similar issue, though I installed from scratch.
My setup:
 - Ubuntu Feisty
 - home partition retained from a previous dapper installation
 - I have messed a bit with binary drivers for my Nvidia GeForce Go 5700. I
think I don't have any binary installed (maybe for my wireless card) as now I'm
running the 'nv' driver and linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-15-generic is not
installed

Symptoms:
 - Start screensaver preview
 - play a bit with fullscreen preview, with both 2d (eg. Xylap) and 3d (eg.
AntInspect) screensavers
 - X crashes and I'm back to gdm login screen

I also have enabled laptop-mode from /etc/default/acpi-support. I get a crash
both with a reboot and after susped/hibernation, and with both
/proc/sys/vm/laptop_mode 0 and 2 (that is laptop mode disabled and enabled)
I haven't tried without laptop-mode, if you think it's relevant, I'll try
disabling it from acpi-support.
