Here's how the auto-magic worked for me.

1) Get the new xserver-xorg-video-i810-modesetting driver
2) remove the old xorg.conf (`sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf 
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.bak`)
3) Restart X with the cable already plugged in (logout and back in or 
Ctrl+Alt+Backspace)
4) Image appears on both my lcd panel and crt/lcd external monitor.

When following the same steps, what actually happens and what do you
expect to happen?
