Hi Susan,
ALSA has not been removed. "alsamixer", assuming you mean the terminal
application, works fine here. What happens when you try to run it on
your side?
If you mean the "sound indicator" (the drop down on the top row with the
speaker icon), please file a separate bug against indicator-sound.
