Public bug reported: The bug is that Totem is the default video player for Ubuntu. Totem has failed miserably at this role.
Totem gives me nothing but problems. I manage the computers at a small business. Every single employee (without exception) cannot stand Totem. It presents problems when trying to play DVDs, videos, online streams, etc. The fact that Totem is the DEFAULT video player confounds the problems because it is what Ubuntu automatically launches when videos need to play, especially online (e.g., when trying to play online streams). Whenever this happens, 99% of the time Totem will not play/work. So I get called in and told to fix the problem. I have yet to come across a situation where VLC will not play the stream. But the problem is how do I get VLC to play the stream instead of Totem? Further, how do I get VLC to launch natively, from the beginning, instead of Totem? I am TIRED of getting called in and yelled at because Totem invariably launches again at some point in the future trying in vain to play back some video. I got to figure out how to make VLC native for that type of stream, etc. The employees complain to me "Why can't you just uninstall Totem and make VLC default?" Figuring out how to get VLC to be DEFAULT and launch natively for ALL video playback tasks (including streaming) is NO PICNIC! But this would not be an issue if VLC was default instead of Totem. You'd make my life and no doubt the lives of all Ubuntu users easier if you would just make VLC the default video player for Ubuntu.
