I'm having the same problem with an Atheros PCMCIA 5212 A/B/G card too. If you tell network manager to connect to that network then it just seems to continue scanning anyway and doesn't connect (it's only a few meters from the AP). If you disable roaming and set it to use that AP manually (despite its distance from the AP only shows up as 46% strength) it stops scanning but still doesn't connect. Although if you check iwconfig "Rx invalid nwid" appears to be climbing at just over one per second.
