Further information - the following is generally what I always see:

1) Double-click on desktop shortcut, Calc opens with empty spreadsheet
2) Trying to open the file using the shortcut filename, i.e.
/home/username/Desktop/filename.ods from the Recent Documents list will not
open the file
3) Trying to then open the file using its full name, i.e.
/home/username/Documents/filename.ods from the Recent Documents list will open
file in a new program window but I also see that in the first program window it
is not possible to close the empty spreadsheet using the "x" in the top-right
corner as the "x" isn't now displayed.

But if I omit step 2 file opens in the existing Calc window as it should
when using the Recent Documents list

Further information to follow as I find it.
