I am experiencing these same symptoms on my Dapper Drake installation.
I have random screensavers set to go off after 15 minutes of idle. It
doesn't seem to matter which screensaver runs, but it may be fine for
several days, or it may happen within one day.

I do not use nVidia--I have an ATI Radeon 8500 board (ATI Technologies
Inc Radeon R200 QH).

I find that even after this console lock-up, I can log in from another
box on the network and, using top, see that the Xorg process is using
over 99.5% of the CPU. The command response on that foreign login
session seems fine, despite this level of resource consumption. That's
the good news. The bad news is all my efforts and those of some of my
more savvy Unix-heads have failed to remedy the issue. The runaway Xorg
process puts a death-grip on the box, and no "kill -9" or "init 3" seems
to be able to change it. The only thing that works is a reboot or
shutdown. This puts a damper on my "Linux-is-better-than-Winders"
gloating, so please fix soon :)

Oh, and please advise if you require any further configuration file or
other input from me.

Thanks!
