I was able to confirm this problem. Both with variables that already
existed within custom-set-variables, and others that had been set
through other means in my .emacs. I was unable to save any settings
whatsoever by this means.
If, as Dave suggests, this is not the case in CVS, then perhaps patching
the solution will be straightforward.
