Right, init script is a good location. See https://www.gnu.org/s/libc/manual/html_node/Heap-Consistency-Checking.html#Heap-Consistency-Checking for details about the variable. The mentioned method would call abort() which creates a core dump. I don't know exactly how apport works but assuming that it configures kernel for auto-dumping to a certain directory then it would pick up that core dump there.
