I cannot reproduce it on my test box with 5 HP MF devices (including a PSC 1200), 4 on USB, 1 via network. All 5 devices get listed by all SANE (scanning) frontends and I can actually scan on them.
So I need more information. Can you follow the instructions under "USB printer" on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems?
