Public bug reported:

Not much more to add.. "sudo synaptic" fails silently after entering my admin 
pwd and produces no terminal or other output.
The syslog contains something like:

synaptic[2503]: segfault at 0 ip 00007f36b0affbf6 sp 00007fff0d1c9d80
error 4 in libstdc++.so.6.0.14[7f36b0a63000+e8000]

I'm happy to follow instructions to install the appropriate debug
symbols and get more informative info..

This problem is happening consistently and with a fresh reboot.
