I used to use Alt-F2 to bring up a terminal on the screen. I've set "Alt+F2" as the shortcut for "Launch Terminal" in [System settings > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Launchers] (/apps/metacity/global_keybindings/run_command_terminal in gconf), and it works, but it spawns below the dash home...
