this also look like a dupe from bug #868400 , this is the classic case of the 
gnome session is disabling the touchpad on startup (on gdm you dont have gnome, 
so it works)
you can also try to create a new user and login... if dupe the mouse will work 
until you disable the touchpad for the first time
(watch out also for the "disable touchpad while typing")

Title:
  synaptics touchpad doesnt enable after disabling from fn+f6 key on
  dell xps l702x. Even after restart just doens't work now.
