@buzzsaw: I don't know for sure what is causing the crash but it seems like it is sound related for many since disabling sound stops the problem for me, and someone else (in the forum post I linked on 2007-05-10) reported that switching from onboard sound to a standalone card stopped the problem for them.
You are right that people experiencing the problem have reported using a number of different audio chipsets, but it looks like most (maybe all?) have chipsets that use the snd-hda-intel drivers.
