** Description changed: After upgrading to 11.10 today, the computer didn't start anymore. After the "ubuntu loading screen" with the dots, the display reverted to a text screen, ending in some information about "battery status". After logging in on tty1, I could start gdm as a workaround. The problem is twofold. First, /var/log/lightdm/x-0.log (and I think /var/log/lighdm/lightdm.log as well) complained about insufficient privileges to create /var/log/lightdm/x-0-greeter.log. After `chown lightdm /var/log/lightdm" said file was created (when restarting lightdm) containing the single line exec: 33: unity-greeter: not found If this happened to a new user, they would be lost! + PS: unity-greeter is installed to /usr/sbin/, but that is not in the + path apparently) + ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.10 Package: lightdm 1.0.1-0ubuntu6 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.0.0-12.20-generic-pae 3.0.4 Uname: Linux 3.0.0-12-generic-pae i686 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia ApportVersion: 1.23-0ubuntu3 Architecture: i386 Date: Mon Oct 17 14:08:04 2011 ProcEnviron: - LANGUAGE=de_DE:en - PATH=(custom, user) - LANG=de_AT.UTF-8 - LC_MESSAGES=de_DE.UTF-8 - SHELL=/bin/bash + LANGUAGE=de_DE:en + PATH=(custom, user) + LANG=de_AT.UTF-8 + LC_MESSAGES=de_DE.UTF-8 + SHELL=/bin/bash SourcePackage: lightdm UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to oneiric on 2011-10-17 (0 days ago)
