I can assure that the patch works but the the checkgmail notifier isn't visible which might be due to unsatisfied dependencies which also include libgtk2.
The following error is obtained: Gtk-WARNING **: Unable to locate theme engine in module_path: "pixmap", at /usr/lib/perl5/Gtk2.pm line 138.
