Public bug reported:

Few (at this moment 11) hours after starting gnome-shell, it uses about
67% of 2GB system memory (the ram), and maybe few hundred MB-s of the
swap, too. I know it is not Ubuntu only, it appears in Fedora, Arch and
more.
