I had the same problem, but it works after installing the deb file. One minor problem is that that bottom panel is not shown automatically. I have to manually switch it on, each time I open a document. Is there a way to tell gedit to always show the bottom panel? It used to remember the last setting, but now it doesn't anymore. I suppose it's rather a gedit issue and has nothing to do with latex.
